In 3D optical interconnection, silicon-based optical waveguides and polymer optical waveguides are connected via microlenses, which has been studied and developed as a method to realize high-density optical packaging. We have fabricated and evaluated a prototype of a polyimide fiber with high heat resistance and flexibility as the polymer optical waveguide. The high heat resistance of the fiber may ease the temperature limitation of the mounting process, and its high flexibility may be useful for high-density mounting in three dimensions. In this effort, we have fabricated a prototype of an embedded polymer optical waveguide in which the polyimide fiber is embedded in a polyimide film and the film functions as a cladding.
