Small molecules such as ions has important for maintaining biological functions, and simple and sensitive detection and quantification of these molecules makes it possible to detect abnormalities in biological functions. We have been succeeded to apply for ion sensors by fabricating polymer-based photonic crystals (PhC) and adding recognition elements into PhC. However, polymer-based PhC has a problem due to their low refractive index of the polymer itself. In order to solve this problem, in this study, zirconium oxide nanoparticles contained poymer-based PhC, was developed for sensing applications.
