Altermagnetism through distinctive band structures has attracted significant attention. However, the techniques available for probing altermagnetism are limited. A recent controversial issue in RuO₂ involves the magnetic moment values at the Ru sites. We conducted x-ray magnetic linear dichroism (XMLD) to detect the Neel vector direction and magnetic moments for different orientations of the RuO₂ (101) and (110) planes.
