Alvarez lenses, a type of variable-focus lenses, are expected to be used in various applications because of their features suitable for miniaturization. However, conventional Alvarez lenses are based on the near-axis approximation, which causes problems in image formation performance when the angle of incidence and numerical aperture are large. Numerical calculations have predicted that the use of a fourth-order phase term in addition to the near-axis approximation would improve the imaging performance, but there have been no experimental reports. Therefore, in this study, we experimentally verified a variable-focus Alvarez meta-lens using higher-order polynomials.
