Diamagnetic levitation can achieve the levitation of objects at room temperature and is expected to be applied to the development of new material and basic scientific experiments. Generally, to achieve diamagnetic levitation, it is necessary to generate an extremely strong magnetic field using a large magnet such as a hybrid superconducting magnet, however, researchers at companies and universities rarely have the opportunity to use such magnets. Therefore, it is difficult to apply this technology to other experiments. Recently, we discovered a new magnetic levitation system that simply aligns four commercially available permanent magnets, and reported on the magnetic levitation of water, a typical diamagnetic substance, through precise magnetic field distribution simulations1). In this study, we used this technology to perform an experiment of recrystallization of ammonium chloride under magnetic levitation conditions. As a result, we obtained crystals with a unique shape that is not seen in normal recrystallization. In this paper, we report on detailed observations of the recrystallization process.
