An ionic liquid based on alkyl-primary-ammonium (n-octylammonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (OA-TFSI)) was developed as additive for a Spiro-OMeTAD hole transport material (HTM) in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) and exhibits specific functions; during the HTM deposition process, OA cations in the HTM solution spontaneously passivated the perovskite layer. As a consequence, the use of OA-TFSI enhanced photovoltaic performance of PSCs, compared to those with Li-TFSI, and improved stability against humidity exploiting hydrophobicity of aliphatic moiety in the OA cation being over the perovskite surface.
