Improvement of the upward directionality of diffraction wave from Grating Couplers (GC) by adding a phase adjusting layer and a reflective layer on top of the GC are investigated. When guided wave is diffracted by the GC, a part of the upward diffraction wave is reflected by the reflective layer and interferes with the downward diffraction wave. If the thickness of the phase adjusting layer is determined so that they are in opposite phase, they cancel each other out and the upward directionality is improved. We examined a specific structure consisting of an SOI substrate and predicted a significant improvement in upward directionality by analytical calculations.
