We fabricated and evaluated a grating coupler for coupling between Si waveguides and out-of-plane optical fibers, designed to exhibit a flat coupling efficiency spectrum suitable for wavelength-division multiplexing communication. The coupling efficiency between the grating coupler and a vertically aligned single-mode fiber reached a maximum of -1.1 dB, with a 1 dB bandwidth of 54 nm.
