(K, Na)NbO3[KNN]-based ceramics have attracted attention as potential candidates for lead-free piezoelectric materials. However, among various challenges, the reproducibility issue in KNN-based ceramics is a serious drawback. One of the reasons is reported to be irregular grain growth when KNN ceramics is prepared by monoclinic Nb2O5. Therefore, a systematic study from the selection of starting materials to the clarification of the formation mechanism is significantly required. In this study, we investigated the effects of various starting materials of Nb2O5, including differences in crystal structure and particle size homogeneity, on the formation of the KNN phase.
