Organic photodiodes (OPDs) find application as optical sensors, and for practical applications, high-speed response is required in addition to high sensitivity characteristics. The bulk hetero (BHJ) structure, which consists of a donor (D) material and an acceptor (A) material, is expected to have higher photoelectric conversion efficiency and sensitivity because the D/A interface exists throughout the active layer. In contrast, the PiN structure, which involves the placement of the active layer between the charge transport layers, has been demonstrated to facilitate expeditious charge transport of the generated exciton, thereby enhancing the response speed.
In this study, PiN-OPDs with i-layers consisting of a donor material with an absorption band in the visible light region and an acceptor material with an absorption band in the near-ultraviolet region were fabricated by co-deposition method. The improvement of photoelectric conversion efficiency and photo-response at each irradiation wavelength were evaluated.
