The cell membrane is a thin barrier that separates the cell from its external environment and plays a crucial role in maintaining cellular homeostasis, nutrient transport, and signal transduction. In addition, electric fields generated by ion concentration gradients across the membrane affect mechanical properties such as membrane tension and bending stiffness. In this study, we investigated the effects of external electric fields on the mechanical properties of cell membranes through experiments using artificial membranes and molecular dynamics simulations.
