[10a-B31-3]Analysis of piezoelectric response in BiFeO3 epitaxial thin films

To improve the performance of piezoelectric energy harvesters, Mn-substituted BiFeO3 epitaxial thin films were fabricated, and the relationship between their piezoelectric properties and various material characteristics was investigated. X-ray diffraction and polarization–electric field (P–E) measurements confirmed good crystallinity and ferroelectricity over most of the film, except in regions with reduced crystallinity. Even among samples exhibiting similar saturation polarization, the piezoelectric coefficient showed significant variation and no clear correlation with εrPr was observed. These results suggest that the piezoelectric response of BiFeO3 thin films is predominantly governed by extrinsic effects.
