Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are widely used in advanced technologies, including semiconductors, batteries, and electronic materials, because of their unique physicochemical properties. At the same time, growing concerns regarding their environmental persistence and potential impacts on human health have led to increasingly stringent regulations worldwide. Recent discussions have expanded beyond legacy PFAS to include ultra-short-chain PFAS, precursor compounds, and other previously unrecognized PFAS, highlighting the need for comprehensive assessment strategies. This lecture will provide an overview of current regulatory and scientific developments related to PFAS and discuss the capabilities and limitations of major analytical and measurement approaches, including targeted analysis and PFAS total assessment methods. Particular emphasis will be placed on the challenges associated with assessing PFAS beyond conventional target compounds. In addition, PFAS Total Solutions (PFASOL), an AIST platform for supporting PFAS-related technical consultation and collaborative research, will be briefly introduced.
