Phase-field methods have played an important role as a “computational microscope” for visualizing local thermodynamic states such as spatially inhomogeneous free energy, entropy, and elastic energy arising from microstructures and defects. By extending phase-field modeling concept to the atomic scale, the applicant will develop a new computational microscope that enables visualization of local thermodynamic states with atomic resolution.
