Cosmic-ray muons, a type of natural radiation, have extremely high penetrating power and can pass through large structures such as reactor buildings. By performing non-destructive measurements using these muons, it is possible to assess conditions inside the reactor and estimate the amount of uranium contained in the debris.
This report presents the principle of the muon scattering method—which is expected to achieve higher accuracy compared to conventional transmission methods—and the development results obtained to apply this technique to the decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station.
