Control methods for the invasive apple snail, Pomacea canaliculata, which causes severe damage to paddy rice crops, still rely heavily on manual labor, including shallow water management, pesticide application, and the removal of egg masses and individual snails by hand. Consequently, the burden on farmers facing an aging workforce and labor shortages has contributed to declining motivation for farming and, in some cases, abandonment of rice cultivation. We have developed a novel control method for P. canaliculata through the combination of (1) electrical control of snail taxis behavior and (2) lethal effects induced by ultrasonic treatment. In this study, the electrical taxis–based prevention devices were installed in paddy fields at Ishigaki City, Okinawa Prefecture, and the potential effectiveness of the method for rice farming in subtropical regions was investigated.
