Semiconductor light-emitting devices suffer from intrinsic limitations originating from their emission mechanisms, such as emission wavelength shifts caused by changes in ambient temperature. To address these issues, we propose “intracenter photonics,” which exploits intra-4f shell transitions of rare-earth ions, and have developed a Eu-doped GaN red LED. This device exhibits high color purity and excellent temperature stability, and full-color integration has also been successfully demonstrated. These achievements open the way to applications in compact, ultrahigh-definition micro-LED displays. In this talk, we introduce the development of this technology from its inception to efforts toward social implementation.
