High-intensity optical fields generated by lasers have recently attracted attention as a basis for novel electron lenses utilizing the ponderomotive potential (optical-field lenses). A key advantage is the enhanced design flexibility in realizing electron lens geometries that are difficult to realize with conventional electrostatic and electromagnetic lenses. Experimental demonstrations have included defocusing (concave lens) action and spherical aberration correction. In this talk, we report a study of the chromatic dispersion of optical-field lenses, and discuss the resulting aberrations when such lenses are employed as condenser or objective lenses in electron microscopy.
