Optical chirality (OC), as conventionally defined, has been found to be a physical quantity limited to spin (spin OC). In this study, we have newly derived orbital optical chirality (orbital OC), which is defined by the spatial twisting of the electromagnetic field distribution and is fundamentally distinct from conventional spin OC, which is based on polarization twisting. This new physical quantity opens a new chapter in chiral photonics, promising novel chiral optical properties and phenomena unique to orbital OC.
