CdSe/CdS quantum dots (QDs) functionalized with a bio-derived ligand, glutathione (GSH), were investigated to clarify the effect of photoexcitation on surface ligands using infrared spectroscopy. Difference spectra obtained before and after light irradiation revealed protonation of carboxylate groups of GSH induced by photoexcitation of the QDs. Comparative studies with different ligands and solvent substitution experiments indicated that the protons originated from water molecules strongly bound to the QD surface. These results suggest that excited charge carriers in QDs can activate interfacial water molecules and induce proton transfer at the nanoscale interface.
