Voltage-gated ion channels respond to membrane potential changes through gating, driving action potential generation. Conventionally, membrane potential was considered only in the transmembrane direction. We developed an artificial lipid bilayer system capable of applying horizontal voltage parallel to the membrane, and found that horizontal voltage can modulate channel activity. In this study, we investigated the effects of horizontal voltage on gating using KvAP, a channel with well-characterized gating properties.
