We have proposed a design method using an evolutionary strategy algorithm called CMA-ES and have applied it to the design of various silicon photonics passive elements. In this study, we have tackled the design of a 2×2 silicon optical coupler and experimentally demonstrated a compact, low-loss, and broadband device. The demonstrated 2×2 silicon optical coupler will contribute to the scaling up and the reduction of hardware errors of MZI-type photonic integrated circuits.
