We have been studying the photoalignment of liquid crystals using near-infrared absorbing dyes that exhibit only weak absorption in the visible region, and we have reported that several nickel dithiolene complex derivatives can induce photoalignment of liquid crystals. However, crystallization of the dyes was observed over time, resulting in the loss of photoalignment behavior of the liquid crystals. Therefore, we investigated the photoresponsive behavior of liquid crystals using nickel complexes with different alkyl chain lengths.
