[2B07]Optical gas pressure standard: from laboratory prototype to portable industrial solution

Traditional gas pressure measurements rely on physical standards like piston gauges and manometers, which are limited by precise mass calibrations, sensitivity to local gravity, and hazardous materials. To address this, NIST is developing a pressure standard based on optical gas refractivity. Since refractivity is proportional to gas density, pressure can be derived from refractivity and temperature measurements. This provides an intrinsically traceable method, reducing reliance on bulky artifacts and increasing global access to high-accuracy calibrations.The NIST prototype, a Fixed Length Optical Cavity (FLOC) pressure standard, matches the accuracy of best classical standards over a wider range (10 mPa to 400 kPa). Current research aims to extend the lower range and miniaturize FLOC technology into portable primary standards, moving quantum-level precision from the laboratory into the field.
