Greetings

On behalf of the entire SSDM Committees, it is my greatest pleasure to welcome all of you to the 2024 International Conference on Solid State Devices and Materials (SSDM2024) to be held on September 1-4, 2024, in Himeji, Japan. Since its first meeting in 1969, SSDM has been one of the most important conferences for active discussions among academia, industry, and government on a wide range of topics related to solid-state devices and materials, from interdisciplinary to emerging research areas.

This year, 577 abstracts were submitted from 13 countries around the world. As a result of rigorous peer reviews by the program committee, we were able to select 243 high-quality papers for oral presentations and 156 for poster presentations.

2 Short Courses will be given on September 1, focusing on “Quantum Technology Development by Advanced Semiconductor Technology”, organized by Mutsuko Hatano from Tokyo Tech and Hiromi Yuasa from Kyushu Univ., and “Sustainable CMOS Scaling towards 0.5nm Node Era”, organized by Meishoku Masahara from AIST. The valuable technical knowledge and ideas on these topics will be provided by industrial and academic global leaders.

Special Talk Session titled "Role of academia in the 2-nm-node era and beyondーThere are still many things to research at academia ! or ?―", will be given on September 1 after Short Courses. The session is organized by Meishoku Masahara from AIST.

On September 2, technical session starts from Plenary Session including a SSDM Award Ceremony. We will have 4 excellent plenary talks by the following distinguished speakers; “Strategy for Semiconductors and the Digital Industry" of the Japanese Government” by Hisashi Kanazashi from MITI, “Creating the Future of Compute: The Next Chapter of Moore's Law” by Sanjay Natarajan from Intel, “Gallium oxide electronics - power, harsh environment, and something new -” by Masataka Higashiwaki from Osaka Metropolitan Univ., and “Evolution of Chiplet packaging architectures advancing AI and HPC growth” by Daniel ng from AMD.

Regular sessions in 12 research areas of the SSDM2024 scope follow the Plenary Session and consist of 48 invited talks, 399 contributed presentations including 24 late-news presentations for 3 days. A Poster Session is scheduled in the late afternoon of September 3rd, just after the parallel sessions of short oral presentations for all posters.

The SSDM is officially sponsored by The Japan Society of Applied Physics. We also express our sincere gratitude to many corporations and foundations for their financial support as listed in the following URL: https://www.ssdm.jp/sponsors.html

I would like to express my sincere appreciation to all the contributors sharing their latest research results and ideas to make SSDM2024 so stimulating and exciting. Solid-state devices, such as electronic and photonic devices by semiconductors and any other materials are an important foundation to support the digital society such as 5G and Beyond, Big Data, AI, IoT, etc. From this point of view, I strongly believe that SSDM plays an important role in our society, by promoting steady progress of “Solid State Devices and Materials”, which are vital for high-quality, secure living and sustainable social development.

I hope you enjoy the exciting program with stimulating discussions and inspiring opinion exchanges during the conference.

September 2024
