The rising demand for nickel in clean technologies has led to intensified extraction operations in Indonesia, which contributes over half of the global nickel supply. However, land use changes from nickel mining can cause significant ecosystem disturbances. In life cycle assessments, the impact of land use resulting from mining is quantified by land use intensity, which measures the extent of land alteration per unit of metal produced. As land use intensity is site-specific, global transformation factors may not accurately reflect local conditions. This study evaluates the land use transformation factors of Indonesia’s nickel mining activities using remote sensing analysis
