Sharing business has the potential to decrease environmental impacts by displacing individually-owned products and providing more efficient alternatives. However, literature has increasingly reported on rebound and backfire effects that question this narrative. Consumer behavior is a key determinant of environmental outcomes, however, it has often been overlooked. We developed a method that integrates choice modeling with product circulation in a multi-agent simulation. We collect data on bike-sharing from Japan and Norway as a case study to highlight substitution patterns and estimate the effectiveness of interventions to promote sustainable behaviors in future scenarios, identifying opportunities and barriers to achieving desirable outcomes.
