Antarctica has long attracted scientific attention as a region that preserves ancient environmental conditions. However, research and observation stations operated by various countries are considered potential sources of local environmental contamination on the Antarctic continent.
In this study, we focused on environmental mercury (Hg) and carbon concentrations and conducted field sampling of soils and atmospheric air in 2021 at the Japanese Antarctic research station, Syowa Station, and surrounding exposed rock areas.
Elevated soil mercury concentrations were observed at multiple locations in the vicinity of the station.
One plausible explanation for the elevated soil mercury concentrations is the deposition of atmospheric mercury derived from fossil fuel combustion emissions released from station activities.
