The Soya region of Hokkaido experiences frequent ferry service disruptions due to strong winds, which lead to nearly 10% of ferry cancellations annually. These cancellations significantly affect regional logistics, making it crucial to understand the characteristics of strong winds in the region. Strong winds occur across a wide range of spatiotemporal scales, from the mesoscale to the synoptic scale. This study focuses on synoptic-scale strong winds that led to the suspension of ferry operations for two or more consecutive days, and investigates their characteristics using AMeDAS observations and ERA5 reanalysis data. The analysis categorizes three major wind patterns associated with low-pressure systems: Group A, where mature Okhotsk lows cause northerly winds in Wakkanai under moist environmental conditions in the Soya region. Group B, where developing low-pressure systems to the north of the Soya region lead to southwesterly winds in Motodomari under dry environmental conditions; and Group C, where a synoptic-scale low-pressure systems over both the Pacific the Sea of Japan cause strong northwesterly winds in Motodomari. This study makes a contribution to operational planning and risk management of Soya ferries by clarifying the winds and sea level pressure characteristics in the Soya region.
