This study explored the theoretical basis for the newly developed portable doppler radar raingauge, a compact microwave radar system that detects water droplets impinging on a capsule-shaped shield. First, the design of the device was derived from voltage data obtained through both laboratory experiments and field observations. Based on this, a simple empirical method for converting the voltage data to rainfall intensity was established using statistics of high-pass-filtered signals. Next, we simulated the movement and deformation of raindrops, of which size follows a Gamma distribution, onto a hemispherical sensor surface using the Moving Particle Simulator (MPS). Furthermore, for representative drop sizes observed in the simulation, we calculated the scattering of microwaves using the Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method. As a result, the values calculated by the MPS and FDTD methods showed consistency with the empirically derived equation, thereby supporting its utility.
