[O09-P04]火星土壌で米は育つか -大学生との試行錯誤-★招待講演

Rice could be one of the staple food crops on Mars in the next several decades. However, can terrestrial rice grow on Martian soil? To verify this, undergraduate students at Niigata University conducted a growth test of rice using Martian soil simulants through a trial-and-error process as part of their undergraduate research.
Through the trial-and-error process, students solved several problems they faced for the first time. Our first trial-and-error is building a growing system. Under a limited budget, they construct a system using commercialized products purchased in a home improvement center and a web store. Second, constructing those items with industrial tools they had never used. Third is solving failure and fine-tuning. Through the process, they learned how to design the experimental system, use industrial tools such as a soldering iron, and consider a heatsink.
Such practical trial-and-error strongly contributes to nourishing and utilizing their freely generated ideas to solve problems.
