[PPS01-P04]Reanalysis of Cassini Saturn Kilometric Radiation source crossing: Search for loss cone Cyclotron Maser Instability

Saturn Kilometric Radiations (SKR) are strong non-thermal radio emissions produced near Saturn’s poles between 3 and 1200 kHz. Thanks to Cassini’s in situ measurements, these emissions were shown to be generated by the electron Cyclotron Instability (CMI), the same generation mechanism as the terrestrial Auroral Kilometric Radiation (AKR) and the Jovian radio auroral emissions. At Saturn and Earth, shell (or horseshoe) electron distributions were identified as the source of free energy. This type of distribution has been recently identified as a secondary source of free energy at Jupiter with Juno. These measurements showed that shell type distributions were conjointly observed with unstable loss cone distributions, the main source of free energy at Jupiter. In this study, we propose to reanalyze electron and radio measurements during Cassini’s SKR source crossing on 10 October 2008 to verify whether a loss cone was observed conjointly and whether it can be a secondary source of free energy for SKR.
