Kaguya observed rapid energy fluctuations, varying by a factor of ~10 within a few minutes, during passages near the subsolar region (SEL latitude -30° to 40°, longitude -5° to 5°) at altitudes of 50 and 100 km in the Earth’s magnetotail lobes. Lunar-origin ions near the lunar surface and in the exosphere are known to be accelerated by two electric fields: the near-surface photoelectron sheath field and the tail lobe convection field. To interpret the Kaguya observations, test-particle simulations were performed using representative surface potentials and lobe convection velocities. The simulations indicate that large energy variations of lunar-origin ions observed by Kaguya cannot be explained solely by the combined effects of photoelectric and motional electric fields, suggesting the presence of additional acceleration mechanisms.
