Meteoroids impacting the Moon generate brief luminous events known as Lunar Impact Flashes (LIFs), which can be observed from Earth using optical telescopes. These observations provide access to key physical parameters of the impactors, such as impact energy, and therefore offer an indirect characterization of the meteoroid flux in the Earth–Moon system. Meteoroid impacts are also a significant source of lunar seismicity, producing seismic waves that propagate through the lunar interior. With the planned return of multiple seismic missions to the Moon in the coming years, the joint analysis of optical LIF observations and lunar seismic data opens new perspectives for impact localization, impact energy calibration, and subsurface characterization. This combined optical–seismic approach provides a unique opportunity to better constrain the impact process and to improve our understanding of the Moon’s near-surface structure and meteoroid environment.
Here we present the LISTEN-FLASH project, a dedicated network of ground-based telescopes - called Twin Impact Lunar Telescopes (TILT) - designed to observe LIFs. We detail the overall instrument architecture, with particular emphasis on the camera systems and the real-time processing algorithms developed to robustly detect and extract LIF events from high-cadence lunar observations. We also report first observational results obtained during two nights of monitoring of the 2025 Geminids meteor shower at the Calern Observatory (South of France), using the initial implementation of the LISTEN-FLASH system, and discuss the system’s current performance and perspectives for future deployments.
