[PPS05-P06]Influence of the interparticle adhesive force on the Brazil Nut Effect

As exploration and sample analysis of asteroid Ryugu by Hayabusa2 progresses, it has become possible to discuss the evolution of asteroid surfaces—where surface gravity is extremely low—in greater detail. One of the emerging findings is that asteroid surfaces, not limited to Ryugu, contain numerous relatively large rock fragments and are poor in particles smaller than millimeters. Why does the asteroid surface exhibit such a characteristic particle size distribution? One theory suggests this is due to segregation (so-called the Brazil Nut Effect), where large particles float to the upper layers of the particle layer as the granular surface vibrates and flows. However, it is not obvious whether this mechanism works effectively in a microgravity environment where interparticle adhesive forces become relatively stronger.

In this study, numerical simulations using the Distinct Element Method (DEM) are carried out to evaluate the influence of the interparticle adhesive force on the degree of segregation, by vibrating particle layers containing particles with various sizes, changing the interparticle adhesive force as a parameter. This presentation reports the preliminary results of the numerical simulations.
