[U01-05]Global Collaboration, Evolving Funding Models, and AGU-Driven Innovation★Invited Papers

Global geoscience research is undergoing a pivotal shift as funding landscapes, policy priorities, and fluctuating commitments to climate leadership evolve. Disruption to the traditional framework of science is presenting new opportunities for establishing a more democratic, inclusive community for science practitioners--including citizen science and users of science--communities, policy makers, health partners and more. Scientific societies can play an increasing role by pioneering new structures and ways to communicate science outside of traditional academia and government and build broader support and potentially attract private funding. For example, at AGU: The Thriving Earth Exchange strengthens and enhances collaboration among communities, scientists, and partner organizations so that all communities can build healthy, resilient, thriving, just, and ecologically responsible futures. Thriving Earth Exchange has 10 years of experience managing projects, running trainings, and collaborating with partners on community science initiatives. It has launched more than 350 projects in 13+ countries. The Ethical Framework for Climate Intervention Research partnered people from diverse and often contentious communities from around the world to come up with a document -- showcasing the convening power of organizations like AGU to develop policies with a diversity of inputs instead of a small group. The honors and award program has pioneered improvements in diversity—crucial for ensuring the next generation of scientists sees people who look like them being recognized. The science policy programs serve members and the larger community by empowering scientists to have an impact on policy from the local to global. Trainings boost policy skills and teach how to build relationships with policymakers and enact change.
