[U06-01]Deciphering Sea Level Variability from Satellite Altimetry Timeseries Across the Red Sea

The sea level variability of the Red Sea exhibits complex behavior characterized by both seasonal and secular components, which can affect the surrounding coastlines. Understanding these components and their implications is therefore helpful for effective coastal zone management and adaptation strategies. Here, utilising all the available satellite altimetry data, we reveal sea-level variability (for both seasonal and secular components) across the Red Sea with an unprecedented detail. We found that seasonal sea-level change is not uniform but has a phase lag depending upon the specific location. Furthermore, over the past two decades, seasonal cycle amplitudes in central region of the Red Sea have been amplified by ~1cm. The secular component exhibits episodic behavior (rather than previously assumed linear variability), which aligns with the trend component variability observed in the Arabian Gulf.
