[U08-P03]Unravelling Controlling Factors of Metallomes in Soil-Crop Systems

Metals and metalloids (hereafter referred as metals) are ubiquitous in agricultural soils. Both toxic and nutritional metals in soils can be taken up by food crops and then transferred to humans. The deficiency of essential metals and/or the exposure to toxic metals via diets can cause adverse health outcomes including chronic diseases. Thus, we propose to study and manage the full composition of metals (i.e., metallomes) in crops to enhance nutrition and food safety. We hypothesize that crop metallomes can be optimized by agricultural practices. We first studied how soil water conditions, plant growth stages, and soil amendment applications could affect the metallomes of carrot (Daucus carota subsp. Sativus) and wheat (Triticum aestivum) grown in sandy soil under laboratory and greenhouse conditions. Our preliminary results demonstrated that carrot and wheat metallomes were primarily controlled by plant growth stages and soil water conditions had limited effects. Intriguingly, wheat kernels had different metallomes under varying soil water conditions. Furthermore, the non-correlated metallomes of carrot seedling roots could change with soil amendments, which was not the case for the correlated metallomes. We then investigated the metallomes of mature carrots grown in greenhouse with single (biochar) or combined soil amendments. We are exploring environmental and biological controls on crop metallomes using multi-omics approaches. Optimizing crop metallomes through agricultural practices could be possible for enhancing nutrition and food safety, thus improving public health.
