The Kuroshio and Oyashio currents in the northwestern Pacific play a critical role in ocean circulation and the global carbon cycle. Radiocarbon (14C), expressed as D14C in dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), provides a powerful tracer for investigating water mass age, mixing processes, and air-sea CO2 exchange. In this study, we focus on surface seawater radiocarbon distributions in the Sanriku region, where subtropical Kuroshio waters interact with subarctic Oyashio waters.

Surface seawater samples were collected from 72 stations during the MR24-02 cruise of R/V MIRAI between March 12 and March 23, 2024. They were analyzed using a single-stage accelerator mass spectrometer (YS-AMS, National Electrostatic Corporation) at the Atmosphere and Ocean Research Institute, the University of Tokyo. By examining spatial variations in D14C across the sampling region, this study aims to constrain surface water mass mixing patterns and assess the relative influence of Kuroshio and Oyashio waters in the Sanriku area. The resulting radiocarbon dataset will provide new constraints on surface circulation and carbon transport in the northwestern Pacific, contributing to a better understanding of regional ocean dynamics and their role in the marine carbon cycle.
