The Noto Peninsula Earthquake in January 2024 caused extensive damage to coastal and mountainous residential areas and infrastructure networks typical in the remote regions. The subsequent Oku-Noto heavy rainfall in September 2024 then impacted severely onto the local communities that were still on the recovery processes of socioeconomic and civil engineering aspects. Chained effects between earthquake and heavy rainfall have been recognized and suspected regarding disaster phenomena involving sediment and water discharges. In areas with extensive coseismic landslides, sediment production from hillslopes influenced water runoff from the headwaters as well as transport processes of sediment–water mixture in channels in downstream reaches. Majority of the coseismic landslide-dammed lakes were breached due to the large stream water runoff. In some areas underlain by stratified rocks, the heavy rainfall triggered many deep-seated landslides even they posed only few landslides occurrence by the preceding earthquake, implying possible mechanisms of geo-structural damping of seismic motion and partial breakage of the bedrock. This presentation focuses on the disasters triggered by the chain reaction of the earthquake and subsequent heavy rainfall in the northern Noto Peninsula, revisiting back on last Union session held in JpGU2025, and providing an overview of the needs and seeds in research to address future tasks for mitigating impacts by such cascading complex disasters.
