We have reported that a mixture of niobium oxide and zeolite can catalyze the retro-aldolization of glucose and the subsequent acetalization of its products efficiently. In this study, we focus on the supported niobium oxide catalysts to further improve the product yield by optimization of niobium loadings and the choice of zeolite topology. We examined MOR, FAU, MFI, and FER-type zeolite-supported niobium catalysts, and found that MFI (Si/Al = 80) gives excellent yield/selectivity toward C4 and C2 carbohydrates under optimized reaction conditions.
