In recent years, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been generated as by-products in the petroleum refining process. Selectively converting these by-products into BTX (benzene, toluene, and xylene) can improve resource utilization efficiency and indirectly reduce CO2 emissions. Therefore, this study investigates multifunctional catalysts capable of selectively hydrogenating PAHs into monocyclic aromatics and further converting them into BTX through desulfurization and alkyl ring-opening reactions. Various acidic support materials and active metals were used to prepare the multifunctional catalysts, and their performance was tested in the hydrotreating of 1-methylnaphthalene (1-MN) and phenanthrene. Additionally, the effects of reaction conditions, acidic support materials, and active metals were examined.
