Power-to-X (PtX) processes are seen as a viable long-term solution for both renewable electricity storage and captured CO2 utilization. However, PtX introduces inherent inefficiencies that are often glossed over or addressed piecemeal. This presentation utilizes literature and process modeling to perform a fundamental analysis of PtX processes for the most commonly studied e-fuels. When mapping the energy flow through each process, the vital bottleneck around water electrolysis becomes apparent, as do the relative efficiencies of the CO2 utilization routes. For example, production of methane is near its theoretical maximum efficiency while production of Ft fuels has the most room for improvement.
