Catalytic hydrogenolysis is a promising strategy for converting polyolefin waste into valuable saturated hydrocarbons under relatively mild conditions compared with other methods such as pyrolysis. Ru/CeO2 is an effective heterogeneous catalyst for the hydrogenolysis of polyolefins; however, the formation of low-value gas products, especially CH4, remains a major challenge. Since smaller Ru particles can suppress consecutive C-C bond cleavage in LDPE over Ru metal surface, we designed lanthanide oxide-modified CeO2 (LnOx-CeO2) supports, in which the strong base sites enhance Ru-support interaction and suppress Ru particle aggregation, to achieve low gas selectivity while maintaininghigh catalytic activity in polyethylene hydrogenolysis.
