Phase change materials (PCMs) based on linear even-carbon paraffins have attracted attention for thermal energy storage applications. This study aims to develop a pathway-controlled hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) system for selective production of linear even-carbon paraffins (n-C16 and n-C18) from Pongamia oil for phase change material applications. Unlike sulfided catalysts, which require sulfur additives and sulfiding treatments, non-sulfided Ru-based catalysts are proposed to simplify the process and avoid sulfur contamination to product. To suppress decarboxylation, cracking, and isomerization, secondary metals such as Mo, Fe, Co, and W, together with oxide and zeolitic supports, will be introduced to tune active sites, and promote selective C–O bond cleavage, establishing principles for controlled HDO of non-edible oils.
