The topological properties of photonic crystals have been theoretically and experimentally realized in many photonic systems. These robust states are explained by topological invariants such as Chern number, Berry curvature or Zak phase, which are based on the eigenfunctions (wavefunctions) of Hermitian Maxwell’s equation. On the other hand, in the non-Hermitian systems, where the angular frequencies (eigenvalues) are complex number, not only the eigenfunctions but also the eigenvalues exhibit topological properties. In this work, we will extend our study to the topological properties of non-Hermitian photonic systems. The non-Hermitian skin effects are found due to the nontrivial loop with point gap topology. Our findings of skin effect are in the lossy 2D photonic crystal. We expect this effect can also be found in 3D photonic crystals.
