Biosensors utilizing surface-enhanced fluorescence (SEF) play a crucial role in detecting biomolecules and biomarkers due to their high sensitivity, allowing quick and accurate analyses. Among a variety of resonant nanoparticles (NPs) applied for SEF biosensors, silicon (Si) NPs with diameters of 100–250 nm have been attracting much attention because of low-loss Mie resonances in the visible range. Up to now, Si nanostructure arrays have been fabricated by the electron-beam lithography technique on a solid substrate. Although this method can produce Si nanostructures with high accuracies, it is difficult to produce >millimeter-scale arrays that can be used in naked-eye readable biosensors.
Here, we develop a facile self-assembly process to immobilize colloidal Si NPs onto a substrate and demonstrate enhanced fluorescence of fluorophores attached on the Si NPs.
