Diamagnetic levitation is an attractive alternative technique for microgravity experiments in space. Still, it is not versatile because it requires huge superconducting or hybrid magnets that generate powerful magnetic fields of around 20 T. We have recently discovered that various materials such as water, sodium chloride, silica, and alumina can be magnetically levitated in the gap between a pair of magnets simply by arranging small permanent magnets of about 1 cm in a specific configuration. In this study, a KCl solution was levitated using the above method, and the solvent water was evaporated, resulting in the successful recrystallization of KCl. It was also found that single crystals could be easily obtained by changing conditions, such as the humidity of the surrounding environment and the concentration of the solution. This extremely novel method is considered a universal crystal growth method and is expected to be applied to research using high-value-added substances such as protein molecules.
