Spin orbit torque has the potential to succeed spin transfer torque in the next generation magnetic random access memories (MRAM). To evaluate the strength of the spin orbit torque, various techniques have been developed. The harmonic Hall measurement is one of the commonly used methods to study the spin orbit torque. Although the harmonic Hall measurement is simple and easily accessible with standard lock-in amps, it has been reported that there is a limitation in its applicability in certain material systems. One particular example is W/CoFeB/MgO trilayer in which the CoFeB layer is perpendicularly magnetized. The objective of this study is to clarify the issues associated with the limitations in the measurements in certain systems. We discuss the limitations of the harmonic Hall measurements and provide guidelines for further improving its accuracy.
