Spin–orbit torque (SOT), which is transferred by spin current generated via spin–orbit coupling, is promising tool to manipulate magnetization dynamics. Electrical modulation of SOT itself has not been extensively studied yet because the key materials with significant spin–orbit coupling are primarily 5d transition metals, while electric field effect has been considered to have a minimal impact in metallic systems. On the other hand, recent studies revealed that spin–orbit coupling in ultrathin Pt single film could be electrically tunned by means of ionic gating using electrolyte, where electric-double layer induces massive carrier accumulation and depletion near the surface. In this study, we focus on perpendicularly magnetized Pt/Co/Pt trilayer system. We report the inherently compensated damping-like (DL-) SOT efficiency in the trilayer system is electrically modulated by ionic gating.
